Reflections on Project EPIC 1
I got up at 6.45am this morning to the sound of my racing pulse, frantic and worried that we had more houses to paint and that somehow I had overslept. It was a wonderful realisation and relief that we the EPIC-ians had already successfully painted 10 houses yesterday and built a fully functional toilet. It is crazy indeed how our first project came and went like the wind, even though time was short, everything somehow fit together perfectly like EPIC was a tetris game being played by a professional. It was barely 1 and half months ago when GEL decided to take on this EPIC challenge and sceptically send out an invitation through facebook. It was only about 14 days ago when we received our first donation adding to our bank balance of zero. It was only 5 days ago when we hit our hopeful target of 50 and exceeded it by 10 a day before we headed to Kampung Jawa Kerling. It doesn't end there. It was only the beginning as during the project, even though dark clouds loomed over us and thunders roared, we were greeted only with shy drizzles of water. It definitely helped that we were surrounded by fellow painters who were high in spirit and painted as though it wasn't going to rain. After two days of sweating, getting painted on and connecting my heart and mind with 60 other people, it is a joy and relief that there is indeed extraordinary people out there who dare make a difference and make the future a whole lot brighter for our nation. Right now there might be less than 100, but this little trip of ours has fueled my spirit and body to keep this going so that more can come to this same realisation as I have. Project EPIC will only get bigger, and so will our numbers. To all those who braved Kampung Jawa Kerling with us strangers, Thank you for proving this skeptic wrong. The GEL Team 23/1/2010 p/s we await your pictures.

Hi peeps, Just wanna put up some rules for the t-shirt purchasing process. To purchase a t-shirt, there are two methods: - Cash on delivery
- Cash deposit
For COD(cash on delivery) method, please e-mail me at lohjonming@hotmail.com regarding the arrangement to pass you the t-shirt in exchange for the payment upfront - or you could also elect someone else to meet up with one of us (perhaps it would most likely be a mutual friend) and then you could deposit the payment yourself. You would need to provide your: - Name

Charges apply for average purchase quantities and delivery fees may increase for bulk orders. This may be discussed further during communication. Thus, please e-mail me at lohjonming@hotmail.com BEFORE depositing any payment to inform me that you are doing so, and I will get the purchase ready to be sent out. Project E.P.I.C t-shirt is out for orders!
on Monday, January 11, 2010
at 5:46 AM
Hey you! The GEL (Growing Emerging Leaders) Team is gaining steam on the EPIC Project. We are on the way to gathering all the raw materials and transportation and also rallying a target of 50 or more participants to join us in enhancing the quality of life for a group of Orang Asli villagers in Kampung Jawa, Kuala Kubu Baru, on the 21st & 22nd of January 2010. In raising awareness of this project, we are now selling our very own project E.P.I.C t-shirts! Profits will be recycled into the sponsorship of the events organized throughout the cause of this project. The pricing of the t-shirts are as follows: T-shirts will be made available to you only mid-January onwards as the order is still in production. Lay your trust upon the GEL team, that these EPIC t-shirts are not ordinary event t-shirts ordered in bulk and are to be used as your oversized pajamas ending up at the bottom of your wardrobe pile, but that we have consulted a professional t-shirt manufacturer that emphasizes on cuttings specific to each gender and each size. Thus, we are looking to providing you with a cut as fitting as possible which would basically be worth the RM30 (or RM25) you pay. Size chart for this T-shirt is as follows: Youth sizes are recommended to be between S and M. There are 2 ways to order your t-shirt: 1. Drop me an e-mail at dosomethingepic@gmail.com 2. SMS me at 017 226 3153 with the following details: 1. Name 2. Contact Number 3. E-mail 4. Gender 5. Size I will subsequently contact you regarding payment arrangements. Thank you! Here's what the t-shirt looks like: Lastly, I'd like to ask for your help if you would be so kind to pass on the word to whoever you think would be interested in buying an EPIC t-shirt. We're printing several hundred pieces and intend to sell at least half of the batch by the time mid-January comes as we would already need to pay for the billed materials. Please copy and distribute this flyer on to anywhere you'd like. =) (click to enlarge)link: http://bit.ly/4zaDmlSo please support us! Thank you. =)

Our first community event!
“Where’s the toilet?”The one question that brought forth the birth of this project when we realised there was none on our casual visit to Kampung Jawa Kerling, KKB. Instead we were required to find a nice spot in the bushes to do our business. This was our first exposure to the marginalised “Orang Asli” (indigenous folk) and their lack of basic amenities. Project EPIC is our first effort to lend a hand to the Orang Asli in the form of basic amenities and to help give them a new paint job, doors and window panes. It will be held at Kampung Jawa, Kerling, Kuala Kubu Bahru (approximately 1 hour drive from KL) on the 21st and 22nd of January 2009. This event is open to anyone! We will be requiring many budding painters, and builders to make this successful. This will be a wonderful opportunity to give what we can, and that would be our time, and youthful strength. In return, we will be guaranteed a fun, interesting and fulfilling experience, and hopefully take back some painting, building and fixing skills which we would be able to reapply in future projects. We aim to collect Rm6k to help us acquire all the tools necessary. We are also seeking 50 willing pairs of hands who would help us transform this village. For those who can’t make it for the project but are interested in helping out, do contact us at 012-6910086 (John-Son) 017-2263153(Jon Ming) 016-3177788 (Jasmine) or if you'd like to contribute monetarily, we have set up a bank account with the following details: Bank: CIMB Branch: Subang Jaya Account Number: 1261-0002228-05-3 Account Holder: GROWING EMERGING LEADERS CENTRE ---UPDATE!! --- Because it is a two day event, we realized some of you can only come for 1 day. If you would like to help but could only make it for one day you are most welcome. Just inform us if you are so we can get things organised... ---UPDATE!!--- IF you are confirmed and are in with us do accept the invitation and send me your details Name: Gender : Age : Hp #: Email: Whether you will be staying for both days:

The GEL (Growing Emerging Leaders) team is mainly comprised of young adults aged between 18 - 26.
GEL began its life in August 2006. It is a group of youth, gathering every Monday to study how to apply leadership and value based principles in their lives. GEL was started to address the needs of our youth when they integrate with the workforce. One of the principles we expound in our lessons is to be externally focused - i.e. to always give back to society / community.
Resulting from that, the EPIC Project was born. EPIC (Extraordinary People Impacting Community) is a project that is predominantly focused on the plight of our Orang Asli and how we can assist to raise their standard of living in the long term. Whilst this toilet-building project is the first, it is our hope that with the awareness generated by this project, we will be able to garner support for the next project which will be to help the Orang Asli children integrate into government schools.
